Continuous Fracture Modeling (CFM) Consulting
Fracture Characterization, Geomechanical Coupling, Simulation, History Matching and Sweet-Spot Mapping for Naturally Fractured and Unconventional Reservoirs
Assign your company's most challenging fractured-reservoir characterization, simulation, and development-optimization projects — in shale and tight plays, in naturally fractured carbonates and clastics, or anywhere else around the world — to A&A, and let the high-level, seasoned consultants of the A&A Consulting Team find the most appropriate solutions for you.
Avasthi & Associates, Inc. (A&A) is an independent petroleum engineering and geoscience consulting firm. A&A does not sell reservoir-simulation software, fracturing services, proppant, or completion equipment — our only business is expert technical consulting, which means our fracture models, history matches, and development recommendations are never influenced by a stake in any vendor, tool, or technology.
Why the Fracture System Decides the Outcome?
In fractured and unconventional reservoirs, well productivity is governed far less by matrix quality than by the fracture system — the interaction of the natural fracture fabric, the in-situ stress state, and the hydraulic fractures created during completion. These reservoirs produce economically only when an extensive, well-connected fracture network is created and sustained.
Simplified models that treat such reservoirs as lightly fractured matrix rock routinely fail to reproduce observed production, and cannot explain why offset wells with similar completions perform very differently. A model that cannot account for the wells already drilled is a poor basis for deciding where the next ones go, how they should be spaced and stacked, and how they should be stimulated.
What Continuous Fracture Modeling Is?
Continuous Fracture Modeling addresses this directly. Rather than reducing the reservoir to a handful of discrete fractures, CFM represents the fracture system as a set of continuous properties distributed throughout the reservoir volume:
• Fracture intensity, orientation, connectivity, and aperture/conductivity across the reservoir volume, rather than at a limited number of modeled fracture planes
• Calibrated to well and field data — production, pressure, well-test and microseismic observations
• Coupled to geomechanics and flow, so that stress-dependent fracture behavior and fracture–matrix interaction are honored under producing conditions
The result is a simulation-ready model that honors the physics of fractured-reservoir flow, and that can be used to history-match production, optimize stimulation, and target future wells.
Where a CFM Study Pays for Itself?
• Unconventional shale and tight oil and gas reservoirs, where fracture conductivity and connectivity — not matrix permeability — set the production profile
• Naturally fractured carbonate and clastic reservoirs, where fracture corridors control sweep, early water or gas breakthrough, and ultimate recovery
• Fields where offset wells with similar completions perform very differently, and no one can yet say why
• Assets where a conventional single-porosity model will not deliver a defensible history match
• Development programs with well-spacing, stacking, landing-zone or re-stimulation decisions pending
• Operators and partners who want an independent subsurface check on a development plan before capital is committed

1. Fracture System Characterization
A&A builds a simulation-ready Continuous Fracture Model representing fracture intensity, orientation, connectivity, aperture and conductivity, and their spatial variability across the reservoir — integrating the client's own geoscience interpretation rather than setting it aside.
• Image-log interpretation — fracture density, orientation and aperture — together with core fracture descriptions and outcrop analogs
• Integration of existing Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) models where they have already been built
• Seismic attributes, inversion products, and fault and fracture interpretation for large-scale fracture trends and structural control
• Hydraulic-fracture data — stage and cluster spacing, fracture geometry — and microseismic event locations, stimulated rock volume and fracture growth
2. Geomechanical Coupling
A fracture model that ignores stress will mispredict conductivity as the field depletes. A&A integrates in-situ stresses, pore pressure and mechanical properties to constrain fracture behavior under producing conditions.
• In-situ stress state — Sv, SHmax and Shmin from DFIT, mini-frac and leak-off tests; stress orientation from breakouts, drilling-induced fractures and image logs
• Elastic and strength properties — Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, UCS [Uniaxial Compressive Strength (also referred as Unconfined Compressive Strength)], tensile strength and friction angle, from logs or laboratory data
• Stress-dependent fracture conductivity through the life of the field
• Fracture–matrix interaction under producing conditions

3. Reservoir Simulation Setup
The CFM is implemented within a simulation framework built for fractured rock, not retrofitted to it.
• Implementation in a dual-porosity, dual-permeability, or multi-continuum framework, selected to suit the reservoir rather than the software
• Assignment of matrix and fracture flow properties
• Initialization, numerical quality control, and base-case simulation
• Benchmarking against existing simulation models, grids and property distributions where the client already has them
Related A&A Service: For dynamic modeling, decline-curve and type-curve analysis of unconventional assets, please see A&A's Shale Dynamic Modeling Consulting page.
4. History Matching and Calibration
A fracture model earns its authority by reproducing what the field has already done. A&A calibrates the model against the full observational record and documents what the match does and does not constrain.
• Calibration against production, pressure, well-test (PTA/RTA) and microseismic observations
• A defensible history match, with documented sensitivities and uncertainties — not a single tuned realization presented as certainty
• Clear statement of which parameters the data constrains and which remain open
Related A&A Service: For history matching across conventional and unconventional assets, please see A&A's History Matching Consulting page.
5. Hydraulic Fracturing and Completion Optimization
With the model calibrated, stimulation and completion design can be tested against the reservoir's actual fracture behavior instead of against industry rules of thumb.
• Evaluation of stimulation scenarios, fracture conductivity and completion parameters
• Stage and cluster spacing, fluid and proppant selection, and treatment schedules assessed against modeled fracture performance
• Comparison of designs already executed against the results they actually delivered
Related A&A Service: For fracturing design, execution oversight and post-fracturing evaluation, please see A&A's Shale Fracturing Consulting page.
6. Sweet-Spot Mapping
The calibrated CFM and its simulation outputs are integrated to identify reservoir-quality and productivity trends and to map the optimal drilling and stimulation targets across the field.
• Reservoir-quality and productivity trend maps derived from the calibrated model, not from production statistics alone
• Optimal drilling and stimulation targets mapped field-wide
• Ranking of remaining locations to support capital allocation
7. Development Optimization and the Well-Engineering Interface
A subsurface study that stops at the model has not finished the job. A&A hands the reservoir and CFM simulation results, fracture-performance envelopes, sweet spots and reservoir constraints directly to its own Well Engineering Consultants, linking the subsurface model to executable drilling, completion and development decisions.
• Fracture-performance envelopes and reservoir constraints expressed in terms a drilling and completion engineer can act on
• Well-spacing, stacking and landing-zone implications of the calibrated model
• Development and completion recommendations that trace back to the model, phase by phase
How an A&A CFM Study Runs? — Eight Gated Phases
A&A organizes a CFM study as eight sequential, gated phases. Each phase concludes with a client review point at which A&A presents its findings before proceeding — ensuring full transparency and the opportunity to redirect effort as the model takes shape. It is never a black-box deliverable.
• Phase 1 — Project Initiation, Data Integration & QC. Integrate the geological, petrophysical, geomechanical, seismic, fracture, well-test, microseismic and production datasets; quality-control them and prepare consistent, simulation-ready inputs
• Phase 2 — Fracture System Characterization. Build the simulation-ready Continuous Fracture Model
• Phase 3 — Geomechanical Coupling. Constrain fracture behavior with in-situ stress, pore pressure and mechanical properties
• Phase 4 — Reservoir Simulation Setup. Implement the CFM in a dual-porosity, dual-permeability or multi-continuum framework and run the base case
• Phase 5 — HF Optimization, History Matching & Calibration. Evaluate stimulation scenarios and calibrate to a defensible history match
• Phase 6 — Sweet-Spot Mapping. Map reservoir-quality trends and optimal drilling and stimulation targets
• Phase 7 — Development Optimization / Well Engineering Interface. Hand the results to A&A's Well Engineering Consultants for executable development decisions
• Phase 8 — Final Integration, Report & Presentation. Consolidate methodology, models, results, sensitivities, uncertainties and recommendations, and present them
A full-field CFM study of this shape is typically scoped at approximately ten to twelve work-weeks, from project initiation to final presentation. Actual duration depends on the completeness and quality of the data available at the start — timely, complete data is the single largest driver of schedule; and depending on what arrives, some phases take less time and others more than scheduled.

What A&A Needs From You?
A&A works from the data you already hold. Nothing on this list is a precondition — where an item is unavailable, A&A will work with you on a substitute or scope the analysis accordingly — but the more of it that arrives at project initiation, the faster and firmer the model becomes. Data is best provided in industry-standard digital formats (LAS, DLIS, SEGY, ASCII, Eclipse/CMG and similar).
• Geological and structural: structural maps and surfaces, stratigraphic framework, facies distribution, fault interpretation, regional tectonic and stress-regime setting
• Petrophysical: well logs and processed interpretations, core and SCAL data, mineralogy and TOC, brittleness index, net-to-gross and thickness distributions
• Geomechanical: elastic and rock-strength properties, in-situ stress and pore-pressure data, stress orientation, wellbore-stability analysis
• Natural and induced fracture data: image-log interpretation, core fracture descriptions, outcrop analogs, existing DFN models, hydraulic-fracture geometry and microseismic data
• Seismic: 3D volumes, attributes, inversion products, and fault and fracture interpretation
• Reservoir fluid and PVT: PVT reports, fluid properties, relative-permeability and capillary-pressure curves, phase behavior
• Production and well data: production history, bottomhole and wellhead pressures, completion details, artificial-lift data, well tests, interference and tracer tests

• Operational and field-development data: drilling reports and trajectories, field-development plans, and operational, economic, environmental and facility constraints
Software and Licensing
A&A executes the CFM workflow in whichever reservoir simulator the client prefers, at no difference in price. Software licensing is provided by the client: A&A holds no license for any software, resells none, and takes no margin on any. The choice of simulator is the client's, not A&A's.
Why A&A?
A fracture model that drives well placement and completion design will shape an operator's capital program for years. A&A gives you an independent, principal-level answer:
• No software, no proppant, no chemicals, no pumping or completion services, and no sales force — zero bias toward any vendor, tool or technology, and no margin on the licenses you procure
• A reviewer with a commercial interest in the tools, chemicals or services being evaluated cannot give you a clean answer; A&A has none
• Principal-level experts — not junior staff — are named to lead your engagement, backed by 135+ consultants across geology, geophysics, petrophysics, geochemistry, reservoir simulation, geomechanics and fracturing
• Gated phases with a client review at every gate — you see the model take shape and can redirect effort as the evidence emerges
• Your engineers can work alongside the study rather than receive a report at the end — A&A has delivered 26 specialized training workshops and courses at 17 international locations
• Never competes with its clients, and maintains strict client confidentiality — glad to execute an NDA before reviewing any data
• Certified to practice engineering by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers (TBPE Firm Registration No. F-12416), independent since 1990
• A&A bills for the actual professional time its consultants take on the assignment, with a phase-by-phase estimate provided up front to support your budgeting
Understand the Fractures. Place the Next Wells with Confidence.
Tell us about your fractured or unconventional asset and the decision in front of you. A&A will propose a focused, phase-by-phase CFM scope, with the data requirements and estimated effort set out before any commitment. We are glad to sign an NDA before reviewing any project-specific or confidential data, and can typically turn a written technical and commercial proposal around within 5 to 10 business days.
