Natural hydrogen — also called geologic, white, or gold hydrogen — is hydrogen gas that accumulates naturally in the subsurface, generated by geochemical reactions such as serpentinization rather than manufactured at the surface. In a 2024 Science Advances study, U.S. Geological Survey researchers modeled a most-probable estimate of roughly 5.6 trillion metric tons of hydrogen trapped within Earth's crust — most of it too deep, dilute, or dispersed to ever recover, but potentially enough that even a small recoverable fraction could supply all projected global hydrogen demand (roughly 500 million tonnes a year) for centuries. That combination of scale and zero production-side carbon emissions has drawn substantial capital into the space: Koloma alone has raised more than $400 million, backed in part by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and companies including HyTerra, Natural Hydrogen Energy, and Gold Hydrogen are actively exploring prospective basins across the U.S. Midcontinent Rift, Australia, and elsewhere. In Bourakebougou, Mali, Hydroma operated a natural-hydrogen-fueled generator for more than seven years, supplying free electricity to a nearby village and providing the industry's clearest proof of concept to date, and the company is now working toward commercial-scale production.

1. What Is Natural (Geologic) Hydrogen?

Most natural hydrogen is generated by serpentinization — a geochemical reaction in which water reacts with iron-rich, olivine-bearing rocks such as the harzburgite found in ophiolites (obducted slices of oceanic crust) and in ancient, iron-rich Precambrian basement, releasing hydrogen gas as a byproduct. Like an oil or gas accumulation, a natural hydrogen system needs a source rock, a generation mechanism, a migration pathway, and a trap and seal capable of holding the gas in place. In the United States, the billion-year-old Midcontinent Rift — running from Kansas through Michigan — is considered one of the more prospective provinces, because its iron-rich rock readily generates hydrogen on contact with water. Natural hydrogen is fundamentally different from "blue" or "green" hydrogen, which are manufactured at the surface from natural gas or electrolysis, respectively — natural hydrogen is instead explored for and produced much like a conventional gas resource.
