Geomodeling/Static Modeling Consulting

Integrating Geology, Petrophysics, and Geophysics into a Representative 3-D Static Model

Assign your company's geomodeling/static modeling challenges to A&A, and let the high-level, seasoned geological, petrophysical, and geophysical/seismic-interpretation consultants of the A&A Consulting Team build the representative 3-D static model your reservoir simulation, reserves, and development decisions can stand on.

Avasthi & Associates, Inc. (A&A) is an independent petroleum engineering and geosciences consulting firm. A&A does not sell geomodeling/static-modeling software — our only business is expert technical consulting, which means our geomodeling recommendations are never influenced by a stake in any particular software vendor or technology.

The high-level and seasoned geological, petrophysical, and geophysical/seismic-interpretation consultants of the A&A Consulting Team are experienced in all aspects of developing representative geomodels/static models, using state-of-the-art geomodeling/static-modeling software, such as Petrel.

What Is Geomodeling/Static Modeling?

A geomodel — also called a static model, or geocellular model — is a three-dimensional digital representation of a reservoir's structure, stratigraphy, facies, and petrophysical properties (porosity, permeability, and fluid saturation), built by integrating geological, petrophysical, and geophysical/seismic-interpretation data into a single, internally consistent framework.

Unlike a dynamic reservoir-simulation model, a static model does not simulate fluid flow over time. Instead, it provides the geological foundation — the 3-D grid of rock and fluid properties — that a dynamic reservoir-simulation model is built from (through upscaling), and that is used directly for calculating original oil- and gas-in-place volumes and probabilistic reserves estimates.

A&A's Geomodeling/Static-Modeling Process

The high-level, seasoned consultants of the A&A Consulting Team follow a rigorous, industry-standard workflow to build representative static models, including, but not limited to:

•     Structural framework: building the horizon and fault framework from geophysical/seismic interpretation, tied to well tops and marker data

•     Facies and stratigraphic modeling: populating the 3-D grid with rock types, honoring the depositional environment and sequence-stratigraphic framework

•     Petrophysical property modeling: populating porosity, permeability, and water saturation throughout the 3-D grid, using geostatistical methods (variogram analysis, kriging, and sequential Gaussian/indicator simulation) constrained by log and core data

•     Upscaling and QC: upscaling well-log properties to the geocellular grid, and validating the model against the original well data

•     Volumetrics: generating probabilistic (P10/P50/P90) oil- and gas-in-place volumes, and preparing an upscaled model suitable for dynamic reservoir simulation

The Disciplines Behind the Model

A representative static model draws on three A&A geosciences disciplines, each contributing a distinct layer of the model:

Geological Consulting

Our geological consultants integrate structural, stratigraphic, and depositional information into the model's structural framework and facies model — defining the geometry, well-to-well correlation, and rock-type distribution the static model is built around.

Petrophysical Consulting

Our petrophysical consultants supply and validate the porosity, permeability, water-saturation, and lithology values — derived from well-log and core analysis, using software such as Interactive Petrophysics (IP) and PowerLog — that constrain the model's petrophysical property distributions.

Geophysical/Seismic Interpretation Consulting

Our geophysical/seismic-interpretation consultants build the horizon and fault interpretation that defines the model's structural framework, and use seismic attributes and inversion to help constrain the facies model between wells.

What A&A Delivers

A geomodeling/static-modeling consulting engagement with the A&A Consulting Team is built around the practical decisions your company needs to make, including, but not limited to:

•     A representative 3-D static model, integrating structural, facies, and petrophysical property data

•     Identification and quantification of key geological and geophysical risks and uncertainties in the model

•     Probabilistic (P10/P50/P90) oil- and gas-in-place volumes

•     An upscaled model, ready for dynamic reservoir simulation

•     Presentation-ready results, and mentoring/training for your company's technical staff

Related A&A Services

A representative static model is often the starting point for several other A&A consulting services, including, but not limited to:

•     Reservoir Characterization Consulting: reservoir simulation, integrated asset modeling, IOR/EOR, reserves determination, and economic and risk analysis, built on the static model

•     Probabilistic Approach to Reservoir Performance Predictions: fully probabilistic reservoir performance forecasts, using the Top-Down Modeling (TDM) tool or the Design of Experiments (DoE) method

•     Geomechanics Consulting: in-situ stress analysis, fracturing-stimulation design, and wellbore-stability studies, which draw on the same structural and petrophysical framework
